Yoga nidra is how you plant intention when the story-self goes offline.
Yoga nidra is yogic sleep: restful yet aware. The old map named a sankalpa, a resolve planted when the story-self is quiet. The lab map is default-mode decoupling in people who already have hours on the cushion. Fialoke 2024 measured that window. They did not measure a sankalpa trial. Huberman popularized NSDR as a name. He did not invent yoga nidra. Translation, not a scan. We don't believe. We measure. The stills on this page are schematic.
I write from Paris, Tennessee. People send me a clip and ask if yoga nidra is a sleep hack a podcast found. They want the HOW without turning an old map into a new brand. Those are hardware questions. I will answer the hardware. I will not hang a sankalpa on a scan that did not plant one. I will not tell you the people who already lay down with a resolve were stupid.
The gatekeeper said yogic sleep was leftover mysticism. Empty theater. The aisle said the opposite lie. Hang NSDR on the pattern. Skip the old map. Call it discovered last Tuesday. Both hid the mechanism. Fialoke measured default-mode functional connectivity during twenty minutes of guided yoga nidra. Meditators decoupled. Novices did not. Huberman carried a modern label into public. He did not invent yoga nidra. Reality Engineering is the science of making reality respond to intent. This is the window where intent can land because the watcher is quiet. Yesterday's leftover is today's engineering when you name the window.
What is yoga nidra, in this stack?
Yoga nidra is yogic sleep: restful yet aware. The old map named a sankalpa, a resolve planted when the story-self is quiet. The lab map is default-mode decoupling in people who already have hours on the cushion. Translation, not a scan of a sankalpa. The stills are schematic. Do not quote leftover art text, HRV, or alpha numbers as data.
Yoga nidra, in this stack, is not a nap brand. It is not a sleep-hack listicle. It is a named state: restful yet aware. Swami Satyananda Saraswati wrote the old map in Yoga Nidra (Yoga Publications Trust, 1993). Yogic sleep. A sankalpa. A short resolve planted when the story-self is quiet. I am using that book as the old map, not as a trial. It is not Fialoke. It is not a scanner. It is the noun the lab later walked into without naming the plant.
The story-self is the chatter that plans, judges, recalls, and keeps a self-image online. When that loop is loud, a resolve is just another sentence the watcher can argue with. The old map said: wait until the watcher is quiet, then plant. That is a timing claim. It is not a manifestation voucher. It is not a law-of-attraction scan. Form is form. The job is the window.
Related reading: a miracle is an update the old model called impossible. Intent as an update when the old model is not watching. This page is the window. That page is the update. One short mapping. I will not clone that article. Keep the pages apart or you will mash a quiet network into a free-energy slogan.
Related reading: a sigil is data compression. Forget so the DLPFC watcher releases. Same job, different tool. The watcher going quiet is the shared noun. A glyph you stop staring at. A body you stop narrating. I will not rewrite that page as yoga nidra. Compression is one way to drop the watch. Yogic sleep is another.
The stills are schematic. They are not a scan. They are not an HRV printout you can quote as data. If a reel told you NSDR invented the state, that reel skipped the old map. If leftover footer text on the hero still talks like a product aisle, I am ignoring it on purpose. Do not quote it. Do not quote art alpha. Do not quote art HRV.
What did the scanner measure?
Fialoke, Tripathi, Thakral, Dhawan, Majahan, and Garg scanned 20 minutes of audio-guided yoga nidra in English, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar / Art of Living. Recruited meditators n=30, novice controls n=31. After excluding subjects with no auditory-comprehension activation: 28 meditators, 24 controls for analysis. Four periods T1-T3 240 s, T4 215 s. GLM on audio instructions showed auditory, language, and motor activations. DMN regions did not exhibit concurrent deactivation. They did not run a sankalpa trial.
Fialoke S, Tripathi V, Thakral S, Dhawan A, Majahan V, Garg R. Functional connectivity changes in meditators and novices during yoga nidra practice. Scientific Reports 14:12957. 5 June 2024. doi:10.1038/s41598-024-63765-7. PMID 38839877. I opened the paper. I am using their numbers the way they were written, not a content-farm rewrite.
Who got in. Recruited meditators n=30. Novice controls n=31. After excluding subjects with no auditory-comprehension activation: 28 meditators, 24 controls for analysis. Hear that exclusion. They checked that the audio was landing in the language system. People who showed no auditory-comprehension activation left the connectivity analysis. I will keep that cut. I will not pretend the n stayed 30 and 31.
What they ran. Twenty minutes of audio-guided yoga nidra. English. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar / Art of Living. Four periods. T1 through T3 at 240 seconds. T4 at 215 seconds. A GLM on the audio instructions showed auditory, language, and motor activations. That is the task lighting up the systems that hear and parse a guided script. Then the sentence that stops a lazy rewrite: DMN regions did not exhibit concurrent deactivation.
Read that twice. A lot of meditation talk assumes the default mode just turns off when you rest. This scan did not show concurrent DMN deactivation while the audio was running. The story is not "the network went dark." The story is connectivity. How those nodes talked to Default A while the script was on. I will not invent sleep spindles from this fMRI paper. I will not invent delta proof. This is not a sleep-staging study. It is a functional-connectivity study of guided yoga nidra in a scanner.
Honest thalamus, because the uncorrected maps will get quoted. Uncorrected p < 0.001 maps showed bilateral thalamic activation in meditators greater than controls. FDR-corrected maps for that contrast did not have significant clusters. I will not baptize thalamus as an FDR-significant finding. If a reel says the thalamus lit up as the mechanism, that reel skipped the correction.
Meditators decouple. Novices do not.
No. Two-way ANOVA on DMN seeds (PCC, mPFC, right-IPL, left-IPL) to Default A found significant group effects, F range 17.419-30.005, all p < 0.001. No significant main effect of stage. Meditators: markedly reduced FC at all four YN stages versus controls. Effect present in T1 (four minutes), all seeds to Default A p < 0.05. Strongest at T4, p < 0.01. YN versus rest: meditators show DMN-FC reduction throughout T1-T4. Controls show a slight increase or no change. No group difference in resting-state FC before or after YN (p > 0.05). Group by stage interaction F range 2.711-4.054, all p < 0.05.
The seeds were the usual default-mode nouns. Posterior cingulate cortex. Medial prefrontal cortex. Right inferior parietal lobule. Left inferior parietal lobule. Each seed to Default A. Two-way ANOVA. Significant group effects. F range 17.419-30.005, all p < 0.001. No significant main effect of stage. The split is who you already were when you lay down, not which four-minute block you were in as a main effect.
Meditators: markedly reduced functional connectivity at all four yoga-nidra stages versus controls. The effect is already present in T1. Four minutes. All four seeds to Default A, p < 0.05. Strongest at T4, p < 0.01. The window opens early for people who already have hours. It does not wait for a secret last minute the aisle can sell as a climax.
Yoga nidra versus rest. Meditators show DMN-FC reduction throughout T1-T4. Controls show a slight increase or no change. Same audio. Same scanner. Opposite direction. That is the sentence the gatekeeper hid when they called yogic sleep empty, and the sentence the aisle hid when they hung a new name on every body that lay down.
PCC-mPFC functional connectivity reduced during yoga nidra versus rest for meditators at T1 and T3, t-range -2.78 to -2.03, p < 0.05, but not for controls. The core self-talk pair quieted in the people who already practiced. It did not quiet in the novices. I will not upgrade that into a sankalpa outcome. I will not say the scanner watched a resolve take root. It watched coupling.
Resting-state functional connectivity before or after yoga nidra: no group difference, p > 0.05. The groups did not walk in with a different rest fingerprint that explains the whole result, and they did not walk out with a rest fingerprint the paper hung as a trait win. The difference is during the practice. Group by stage interaction F range 2.711-4.054, all p < 0.05. Interaction is real. Main effect of stage is not. Keep those two facts in separate pockets.
Hours on the cushion
Yes, as a correlation, not as a monk cut. Householders, average 2517 plus or minus 1839 hours of yoga (asana, pranayama, meditation), not 10,000-hour monks. PCC seed to Default A versus cumulative practice hours: YN-T1 r(50) = -0.352, p = 0.004; T2 r = -0.276, p = 0.082; T3 r = -0.307, p = 0.043; T4 r = -0.350, p = 0.003. Spearman, FDR. Similar trend after removing an outlier above 8000 hours. Novices in the same scanner did the opposite.
The meditators were householders. Average 2517 plus or minus 1839 hours of yoga: asana, pranayama, meditation. Not 10,000-hour monks. I will keep that noun. The aisle likes a cave. The paper enrolled people who already had years of mixed practice and still had a life. The correlation still ran.
PCC seed to Default A versus cumulative practice hours. YN-T1 r(50) = -0.352, p = 0.004. T2 r = -0.276, p = 0.082. T3 r = -0.307, p = 0.043. T4 r = -0.350, p = 0.003. Spearman. FDR. More hours, less coupling, during the guided scan. T2 did not clear 0.05. I will not flatten four stages into one sticker. Similar trend after removing an outlier above 8000 hours. The result is not one monk dragging the line.
Novices in the same scanner did the opposite. DMN-FC up or unchanged versus rest. If you have no hours, this audio is not a cheat code that copies the meditators' decoupling. That is the hardware sentence. It is not a moral. It is not a paywall. It is a dose-history correlation sitting on a group split. We don't believe. We measure.
I will not turn r = -0.35 into a promise that your Tuesday plant will land. I will not turn 2517 hours into a requirement before you are allowed to rest. I will name what the paper named. Hours track how much the default-mode talk quiets during this script, in this sample, with these seeds. That is the lab map under the old timing claim: the watcher is quieter in people who already trained the watch.
What the mapping is not
No. Fialoke measured functional connectivity during guided yoga nidra. They did not measure a sankalpa trial, a law-of-attraction outcome, or a manifestation score. I am translating an old map (a resolve planted when the story-self is quiet) onto a lab map (DMN decoupling in experienced meditators). Translation, not a scan of intent landing.
No. Yoga nidra is older. Swami Satyananda Saraswati named yogic sleep and the sankalpa in Yoga Nidra (1993). The Fialoke paper names NSDR as a recent protocol that utilizes yoga nidra. Huberman popularized NSDR as a name. He did not invent yoga nidra. The aisle hung a new label on an old map.
Four refusals. It is not a sankalpa fMRI. Fialoke did not plant a resolve and score a manifestation. They measured functional connectivity during guided yoga nidra. I am translating. Translation is not a trial of intent. It is not NSDR-discovered. Yoga nidra is older. Saraswati named yogic sleep and the sankalpa. The paper itself names NSDR as a recent protocol that utilizes yoga nidra. Use that only as: NSDR is a modern label. Yoga nidra is older. Huberman popularized the label. He did not invent the state.
It is not Kjaer-as-mechanism. Kjaer TW and colleagues, 2002, Cognitive Brain Research 13:255-259. Increased dopamine tone during meditation-induced change of consciousness. n=8 experienced yoga teachers. 65 percent increase in dopamine release. Tiny sample. I name it so nobody says I hid a famous number. It is not the mechanism of this page. I will not hang 65 percent on Fialoke. I will not hang it on a sankalpa. Lou HC and colleagues, 1999, Human Brain Mapping 7:98-105. A 15O-H2O PET study of meditation and the resting state of normal consciousness. n=9. One honest sentence. Another small map. Not this scan. Not this n. Not this ANOVA.
It is not sleep. This fMRI paper is not sleep-spindle proof. It is not delta proof. I will not invent a hypnogram from a connectivity study. Yogic sleep in the old map means restful yet aware. It does not mean I smuggled a sleep-lab result into Scientific Reports 14:12957. The stills say SAME WINDOW DIFFERENT LANGUAGE. That footer is the claim. It is not a dataset. Schematic still. The left panel is the first-person map. The right panel is the network noun. Keep the picture as a picture. Do not quote leftover art text from the hero still. Do not quote art HRV. Do not quote art alpha.
Two enemies. The gatekeeper who hid the mechanism by calling yogic sleep empty. The aisle that hung NSDR on an old map and sold the label as a discovery. The missing noun was the problem. Yoga nidra. Sankalpa as timing. Default-mode decoupling in people who already have hours. Not CE nervous-system copy. Not a rewrite of the sigh page. Not a rewrite of the kundalini page. A different window.
Name the window first.
| Name | What it actually is | What it is not |

The watcher has to go quiet.
A screaming watcher will not let intent land. Protocol 01 is free. Four-count inhale. Eight-count exhale. Seven minutes. A number before and a number after. That is the daily stack. This page is the window: the story-self going quiet so a resolve can be planted without an argument. The Library of Biological Wizardry is the rest of the stack if the method earns the next hour. No initiate password. A sequence, then a measurement. We don't believe. We measure.
What should I run if I want a number?
This page is the window, not the daily number. Protocol 01 is the daily four-count inhale, eight-count exhale stack. Seven minutes. A number before and a number after. Start with Protocol 01 if you want a number you can fail in a chair. If the method earns it, the Library of Biological Wizardry is the rest of the stack. We don't believe. We measure.
You will not get a Default A trace from a kitchen floor. You can get a 1 to 10 on whether the story-self is still arguing, and a binary on whether you ran a sequence you can start and leave. That is the first instrument. The daily stack is Protocol 01. Four in. Eight out. Seven minutes. Write the number before. Write it after. This page is not that stack. This page is the window. If you want a number you can fail in a chair, start with Protocol 01. If you want the named window, yoga nidra is older than the podcast label, and the scan says the decoupling is not a novice copy-paste.
Do not mash them. If you turn yogic sleep into your only practice and skip the count you can fail, you are back in weather. If you turn Protocol 01 into a body-scan and call it Fialoke, you laundered two mechanisms. The Library is Reality Engineering. The watcher going quiet is the clean line so intent can land. You do not need the archive to test the first layer. Related reading: intent as an update when the old model is not watching. Related reading: forget so the DLPFC watcher releases. Yoga nidra is how you plant intention when the story-self goes offline. Translation, not a scan of a sankalpa.
FAQ
Short answers you can lift from this page. Visible text matches the FAQ schema exactly. The stills are schematic. None of this is medical advice.

Did Fialoke measure a sankalpa?
No. Fialoke measured functional connectivity during guided yoga nidra. They did not measure a sankalpa trial, a law-of-attraction outcome, or a manifestation score. Is this medical advice?
No. This page is an educational mechanism explainer by JM Thomas. It is not a diagnosis, treatment, cure, or prevention of any disease. It is not a psychiatric protocol. Fialoke 2024 scanned meditators and novices during guided yoga nidra. iRest and PTSD studies are other labs, not this scan. If rest, body-scan, or guided audio distresses you, talk to a clinician.
