A once-a-week heat sit was the control, and that column kept more sudden stops.

A once-a-week heat sit was the control, and that column kept more sudden stops.

A gym poster sold me a longer life from one Sunday sweat. You towel off. You go home proud you showed. I bought the Sunday and skipped the rest of the week.

They asked if the heat was gym marketing

The poster skipped the weekly column.

A thread in r/Biohackers asked whether sauna benefits were real or gym hype, because the writer already sat a few times a week and wanted a file that had counted funerals instead of a locker-room caption.

The writer named the usual poster list, then asked if infrared copied the dry room.

YouTube already sells that heat. A Rhonda Patrick and MedCram talk sits at 2,320,445 views, and a TED-Ed clip on living longer in the room sits at 1,888,504.

On 15 August 2026 a Huberman Lab clip put sauna next to cold water in an immune list and pulled 184,611 views in a day. I wanted the file under that clip, so I went looking for a room that had actually counted the funerals.

Never-users walked off the sheet

The skip left before the clock started.

Laukkanen printed the heat in JAMA Internal Medicine, volume 175, issue 4, pages 542 to 548, DOI 10.1001/jamainternmed.2014.8187, after 2315 men from Kuopio and the farms around it sat through a median 20.7 years on a dry Finnish bench.

The study invited 3433 men aged 42 to 60.

2682 of them showed, 78.1 percent, and 2327 handed in a complete sauna answer. Twelve men who never used a sauna left the sheet. That cut is the whole point of this page, because the control was already a weekly sit.

Baseline ran from 1 March 1984 through 31 December 1989. Mean age sat at 53.1 with a spread of 5.1 years, and body mass sat at 26.9 with a spread of 3.5.

They sat a mean 2.1 times a week, spread 1.1, for 14.2 minutes, spread 7.5, in a room that read 78.9 C, spread 9.6, on a thermometer they reported and a nurse checked.

The four-to-seven group ran a touch cooler, 77 C against 80 C in the weekly room, p under 0.001. Session length did not split those rooms, p = 0.38.

A traditional Finnish room holds dry air at 10 to 20 percent humidity, and the recommended face-level heat sits at 80 C to 100 C, with a splash of water on the rocks when you want a hit of steam.

Follow-up ran to the end of 2011. Mean time to death or the close of the clock was 18.8 years, median 20.7, interquartile range 18.1 to 22.6.

Nobody dropped off the list. Two physicians cross-checked the death papers, and an independent events committee, masked to the clinical sheet, classed every death.

The weekly column kept sixty-one sudden stops

Ten sudden stops sat on the four-day bench.

601 men sat once a week.

The middle room, two or three sessions, held 1513 men, while the four-to-seven bench held 201.

190 sudden cardiac deaths landed on the clock. Fatal coronary deaths added 281, and fatal cardiovascular deaths added 407, while all-cause deaths reached 929.

The weekly column kept 61 sudden stops, 10.1 percent of that bench. Two-to-three sessions kept 119 of them, 7.8 percent, and the four-to-seven bench kept 10, which is 5.0 percent of a much smaller room.

Fatal coronary deaths split 89 then 175 then 17, which is 14.9 percent then 11.5 then 8.5. Cardiovascular deaths ran 134, then 249, then 24. All-cause deaths ran 295 on the weekly bench, while the middle room held 572 and the four-day bench held 62, or 49.1 percent then 37.8 then 30.8.

After they parked age, body mass, systolic pressure, LDL, smoking, alcohol, prior infarct, type 2 diabetes, fitness, resting heart rate, physical activity, and socioeconomic status, the four-to-seven hazard for sudden cardiac death sat at 0.37 against the weekly sit, 95 percent CI 0.18 to 0.75, p = 0.006, trend p = 0.005.

Two-to-three sessions sat at 0.78, 95 percent CI 0.57 to 1.07, p = 0.12, so that middle room missed the pairwise cut and I am leaving the miss visible.

Fatal coronary hazard for four to seven days sat at 0.52, 95 percent CI 0.31 to 0.88, p = 0.01.

Fatal cardiovascular hazard sat at 0.50, CI 0.33 to 0.77, p = 0.001, and all-cause hazard sat at 0.60, CI 0.46 to 0.80, p under 0.001.

That is the funeral I came here to name. The weekly sit already sweated, and it still kept the thicker stack.

Minutes bought the sudden stop

Duration missed all-cause.

1065 men sat under 11 minutes. The 11-to-19 room held 722, and 528 men sat past 19.

Against the short sit, a session past 19 minutes cut sudden cardiac death to a hazard of 0.48, 95 percent CI 0.31 to 0.75, p = 0.001, trend p = 0.002.

Fatal coronary hazard for the long sit sat at 0.64, p = 0.006. Cardiovascular duration hazard sat at 0.76, p = 0.03, while all-cause duration sat flat at trend p = 0.93, so a longer Sunday missed the all-cause cut that four heat days bought.

Heart rate can climb to 100 a minute in a moderate room, and to 150 in a harder one, which they lined up with low and moderate exercise.

Skin blood flow rises. Sweat leaves at 0.6 to 1.0 kg an hour at 80 C to 90 C, a mean 0.5 kg in a typical sit.

They named the hole. This is a cohort with one questionnaire at baseline, and residual confounding stays on the table. The sheet was men in a Finnish dry room at a mean 79 C.

Steam rooms sit outside that thermometer. Hot tubs and cooler boxes sit there too.

Rita Redberg, editing the same issue, wrote that we do not know whether the extra years came from the hot room, the rest after, the leisure that lets a man sit four days, or the company on the bench.

The association still paid. The why stays open.

One percent to two percent of sudden deaths landed inside 24 hours of a sauna, and alcohol sat in a lot of those files.

Orthostatic drops after the room can dump a man who already tilts.

Was the control a skip?

It was a weekly sit. Twelve never-users left the sheet before the clock started, so a skip arm never entered this file.

Did a longer Sunday buy all-cause the way four days did?

Duration cut sudden cardiac death past 19 minutes, hazard 0.48. All-cause duration sat flat at trend p = 0.93, while frequency still cut all-cause at a hazard of 0.60 for four to seven days.

Does an infrared box copy the Kuopio room?

They measured a dry Finnish sauna at a mean 78.9 C, recommended 80 C to 100 C at the face. Steam rooms sit outside that thermometer, and so do the cooler boxes.

What about women?

The sheet was men aged 42 to 60 from Eastern Finland. The authors said later rooms should include women and people who are new to the heat.

Can I drink after the rocks?

Alcohol sat in a lot of the rare sudden deaths that landed inside 24 hours of a sauna. The file treats that mix as a known hole.
