Walking opens a free flow of uses the chair keeps stuck.

I sat at the desk waiting for the apartment idea to land.

Sit first. Then the belt.

The wall stayed blank.

Oppezzo printed the sit in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition in 2014 as volume 40, pages 1142 to 1152, DOI 10.1037/a0036577, after forty-eight undergrads sat at a desk facing a blank wall and then walked a treadmill that faced another blank wall.

Forty-eight people sat first.

They came half from a community college and half from a private university, all of them psych students on course credit, and they spoke every answer into a recorder so a second coder could later throw out the uses that were vague or already said.

Each person got four minutes on three objects. Then four more minutes on three new ones.

A button. A tire.

Then they stood up and found a pace they liked on the belt.

Eighty-one percent of those forty-eight wrote more novel, usable uses on the belt than they had written in the chair, and the mean jump sat near sixty percent while total talk rose from 22.2 uses in the chair to 33.1 on the belt, about fifty percent more words, with the density of good uses still climbing from 2.5 out of ten sitting to 3.0 out of ten walking.

The wall never changed.

The one-right-answer test got worse

Cottage, Swiss, cake.

After the uses they ran sixteen remote-associate triads with fifteen seconds each. Cottage, Swiss, cake wants cheese. Walking cut the hit rate.

Only twenty-three percent improved on that test. The group score fell, t(47) = 2.23, p = .03, d = 0.38, while the use-list rose, t(47) = 7.03, p < .001, d = 0.70.

The belt opened the free list. It pinched the one right word.

A later room of forty-eight community-college students killed the practice story, because the sixteen who sat twice watched the second list shrink. The sixteen who sat then walked grew on eighty-eight percent of the sheets. The leftover from a first walk still beat the people who had never left the chair.

The leftover sat in the next chair

You can sit after.

On a campus path, forty people finished after nine got dropped for bikes and trucks, plus one phone mid-test. Combined walking at the first clock doubled the novel uses, 8.7 against 4.3.

Every person in the sit-then-walk cell grew.

The walk-then-sit cell kept almost the same count once they sat. Walking twice held across sixteen minutes.

Outdoor uses rose in the raw count and missed the interaction cut. The trees were optional.

A wheelchair on the same path

The wheels missed the walk.

Forty adults got one of four rooms. Some sat inside. Some walked a treadmill inside. The outdoor pair either sat in a wheelchair rolled along the campus path or walked that path on their own feet.

Ninety-five percent of the walkers wrote at least one novel high-quality analogy. Fifty percent of the sitters did.

Walking outside wrote the most novel analogies, 9.30 against 3.50 from the indoor chair, and the wheelchair on the same path sat in the middle at 4.90 while high-quality novel analogies moved with the walk, F(1, 36) = 7.83, and stayed quiet with the view.

The file named the split. Outdoor flow raised novelty. Walking raised the structure.

The aisle sold a seated receive.

Reels keep telling you to sit still until the idea lands. I looped a walking-meditation caption and never stood up. Psychology Today ran the Stanford file again in June 2026 and still had to say the boost holds after you sit back down.

You can want the apartment and still take the belt.

Write the uses after.

Stand up. Write the uses.

Put a four-minute clock on one object. Sit first if you want a baseline. Then walk a belt or a block at a pace you already like. Speak the uses. Sit back down and write the second list while the leftover is still warm.

Does a treadmill count?

The first room used a treadmill facing a blank wall. Eighty-one percent still grew. The trees were optional.

What if I try to pick the one right answer while I walk?

How long does the leftover last?

The file measured the next seated list, still warm from the walk. It does not print a day-later n.

What if I live on the tenth floor?

A hallway lap counts as a walk. A belt facing a wall already paid. The measured sit asked for a pace you already like.
