The stamp that worked said angry.

A feeling word sits the alarm down, and a name leaves that same alarm standing.

I kept calling the tightness in my chest resistance and tried to raise the vibe over it for a year, and I never wrote angry.

Two words under a face

Thirty people. A face. Two words. Pick the feeling.

Lieberman and the UCLA social cognitive group printed the scan in Psychological Science, 2007, 18(5):421-428, DOI 10.1111/j.1467-9280.2007.01916.x, after a Siemens Allegra 3-T session with head tape and a button box. Thirty right-handed native English speakers sat the protocol, eighteen of them women, ages 18 to 36, with no neurological history on the sheet.

They ran six kinds of blocks. A 3-second cue named the job, then ten trials at five seconds each, so a block lasted fifty seconds, and a 10-second crosshair sat between blocks while two functional runs carried each kind once.

Four-fifths of the face trials showed fear or anger, and the leftover fifth showed happiness or surprise, with half the targets men. Affect-label asked them to pick the feeling word from a pair at the bottom, while gender-label asked them to pick a name matched for length and first letter. Observe asked them to look at one face and do nothing, and shape-match was the quiet control.

On the negative trials the pair was scared or angry. The leftover fifth used happy or surprise. A name that starts with the same letter is the other stamp.

The name condition left the cluster loud

A name is still a word. The scan still wanted a feeling word.

A left amygdala cluster of 127 voxels lit for a single face against fixation, t(29) = 4.30, d = 1.60, and the same cluster beat shape-match, t(29) = 5.52, d = 2.05. No sex split showed in that cluster or in the later contrasts they ran on it.

Every label and match arm still beat shapes. Affect-label sat at d = 0.92 against affect-match at d = 1.49. Gender-label sat at d = 1.86 against gender-match at d = 1.13.

The feeling word sat quieter than those other three arms combined, t(29) = 2.34, d = 0.87. Against a single face with no job, the feeling word dropped the cluster, t(29) = 3.28, d = 1.22, while matching a face to a face did not, t < 1, d = 0.19, and matching affect also sat under the feeling word, t(29) = 2.20, d = 0.82.

The tight control is the name on the same single face with the same kind of choice. The feeling word still sat lower, t(29) = 2.14, d = 0.79, even though names were faster, t(29) = 3.20, d = 1.19. After they pulled reaction time out, the gap held, t(29) = 2.07, d = 0.77.

So a label in general does not do this job, and the feeling word does.

One region stood up

Right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex. Nothing else rose.

Whole-brain, feeling word against name, and the limbic rooms sat down. The amygdala dropped while the insula sat down with the cingulate belt.

The only region that rose was RVLPFC. Table 1 printed three clusters, two in Brodmann 47 and one in Brodmann 45, and the largest sat at 54, 24, 10, t = 3.37, 44 voxels, after they covaried reaction time.

People who dropped the amygdala more also rose more in RVLPFC at 46, 24, 10, r = .51, which is the inverse they had already seen in earlier labeling files, and this scan locked it against a name rather than a second face.

The path ran through the middle

RVLPFC has a thin wire to the amygdala. The middle station has a fat one.

Medial prefrontal cortex at 14, 48, 2 moved with the same drop, r = .55, and RVLPFC moved with that middle station, r = .66. The direct path from RVLPFC to the amygdala sat at β = .71 until the middle station entered, after which that path fell to β = .34 and died, with mediation at ZaZb = 10.55.

Lieberman points at an unpublished week-later file with Tabibnia and Craske, plus a skin-conductance manuscript with Crockett, and this PDF does not print those ns. Keep the mediation in this scan and leave the later files unlabeled until someone prints a table.

Hariri 2000 already had a labeling drop. This 2007 file is the one that added the name control and the middle-station test. I am staying with 2007.

Resistance is a speech

Manifestation rooms call the tightness a block. The scan wants a feeling word.

I said resistance for a year, and resistance is a theory about why a wish stalled, while angry is a feeling. The aisle sells process the block, then raise the vibe, and the file sold a five-second stamp under a face.

The white-bear page already measured a ban, and a ban hires a monitor, while this chair measures a word. Leave the ban on its own page. You can want the paycheck and still stamp the tightness.

Dan Siegel later popularized name it to tame it, and the measured sit is older than the slogan: a five-second word under a face, while a name that starts with the same letter fails that face.

Stamp the word. Date the scrap.

Pick the tightness you already have and write one feeling word, angry or scared if that is the chest. If the chest holds a different feeling, write that one, then date the scrap and put it down.

Lieberman measured the word against a name in the same sitting, so a vibe speech can stay in the journal if you like the streak. The measured sit is the stamp. The Library keeps the other chairs if you want them later.

What the stamp still asks

Do I need a scanner for the word to count?

Lieberman measured a button press under a 3-T magnet. The home sit is the same press without the magnet: one feeling word on a scrap. The file has no second n for a notes-app streak.

Does resistance count as the word?

The labels in the file were feeling words such as angry or scared. Resistance is a theory about why a wish stalled. Write the feeling in the chest. Leave the theory off the stamp.

What if I stamp the wrong feeling?

They picked the word that fit the face on that trial, so a miss is a new trial. Cross the first word out and write the one that actually sits in the chest. The file does not print a penalty for a crossed line.

How long is one stamp?

Each trial held the face for five seconds inside a ten-trial block. The useful home clock is one word on a dated scrap, and duration past that sitting is unknown.
